Laura Moreton-Griffiths

Works: Staffordshire Street

One-legged buskers, bare knuckle fighters, dancing bears and fatherless children

This series of ink drawings developed from paintings made of 18th century Staffordshire figurines. Laura is fascinated that the whimsical modeling of the characters belies the realities of the period; like today, it was a time of war, famine, restricted civil liberties and urbanization. Now forgotten, Laura recycles the stories, placing the characters together to create modern narratives set in pre-industrial suburbia.
